How do I 'get past' the login screen? (Mint19)

0

Mint 19
Nvidia GTX650

Booting to the login screen is OK but it drops back to the login when I try to login.
1. What is the CLI method of changing (removing nvidia) graphics drivers? (I have tried using the 390.xx & 400.xx drivers)
2. Is there a quick/easy/dirty way of getting a CLI from the GUI login?
