Why doesn't i3bar execute this code properly?

0

I was writing a blocklet for music players for i3blocks. I faced an issue with the following code snippets.

Works

if [[ $(playerctl status | grep -o "No players found") != "" ]]; then
exit 3;
fi

Doesn't work

if [[ "$(playerctl status 2>&1)" = "No players found" ]]; then
exit 3;
fi

Why does the grep code snippet work while the one involving File descriptors doesn't? Does i3 not support them?

Both snippets work as expected in a bash terminal.
